The Crucible Write two diary extracts Essay The other night the other girls and I went out to the woods with Tituba. We were dancing to Titubas song. I should not really be telling you this but I drank a blood charm and Mercy was dancing naked also. Parris saw us in the woods. When we saw him, we all ran away. We forgot about the kettle in the grass. He didnt know that I had drunk blood and I made sure that the girls would not say anything more than that we danced. The charm was to kill Proctors wife, Elizabeth. Shes a lying, cold, snivelling woman. Proctor is the love of my life. He could have so much better than her-he could have me! I heard that Betty was lying still and she would not wake up, I was worried at first but when I went to see her I realised it was just an act to get her out of trouble for dancing. Shes young and very worried. I shook her and frightened her and then she woke up. I told her that her Papa knew about the dancing- that I had told him. She mentioned the charm, I was worried. I still am worried that somebody might find out. I threatened the girls. I know they wont disobey ME. Theyre young and feeble. If anyone spills, Ill get them in the black of the night! Uncle was interrogating me about it all day. He was accusing me of witchcraft. He asked me if I had cast spells. I blamed it all on Tituba. Tituba cast all the spells-we couldnt have cast spells without her! Its all her fault, but deep down I know it isnt her fault. I couldve stopped it. I didnt have to cast spells but I wanted to. I swore blind and told him I did nothing but dance. I didnt want to lie, but if anyone found out that I had cast spells Id be in serious trouble. The only punishment for dancing is whipping! I spoke with John earlier. I know that he desires me but he just can not bring himself to say it. I get so angry when I think about that evil woman at home waiting for him. How come she can have him but I cant? Shes even blackening my name in the village now! Im just waiting and waiting until he realises what is best for him-until he comes for me! I was scared of Hale-hes a powerful man. I had to lie to him over and over again. Uncle told Hale that he saw a kettle in the grass, so then all I got was questions and questions. I thought I was in trouble when I mentioned the frog, but I saved myself by blaming Tituba! I told them that she made me drink blood and cast the spells. Tituba tried to save herself but, of course, they believed ME! The conversation became too complicated so I decided to confess. I opened myself, I told them I wanted the light of God, to leave the Devil and to go back to Jesus! I cried out, I saw Sarah Good with the devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! Betty woke up and joined in with me. I blamed only the old at first, but Ive yet to call out Elizabeths name! I dont mean to harm the old but theres no way that Im getting in trouble for it, and if that means them being hanged-so be it! It was perfect, it was hard proof, hard as rock! PROCTOR Dear diary, I came in from planting very late today. I had to finish right to the forest edge, and it was very tiring. I was glad to come home and see Elizabeth had cooked me dinner. It was rabbit. I slipped some salt in the pot while she was with the children- so it was very tasty and well seasoned! Elizabeth seemed upset, she thought Id been to Salem because I was so late back. I had thought about going there, but I had thought better of it since. I suddenly became very angry because Elizabeth told me that Mary Warren had been to Salem during the day and it sounds like she was too feeble to stop her. Apparently the court have power to hang those accused so Elizabeth wants me to go to Salem to save them from being hanged. She wants me to fight against Abigail; to tell the court that Abigail said it was naught to do with witchcraft that its all a fraud. I dont understand why they believe her anyway, but they do and thats what matters. No- one else can stop this whole fraud! I have no evidence so how can I prove that Abigails lying? Elizabeth believes I hesitate because it will hurt Abigail. All I can do is try. I realised what I had said to Elizabeth about Abigail- She told it to me in a room alone. Elizabeth is very suspicious about it and questions me, but she doesnt believe me. I feel like Im being judged by her, like Im in court. I have gone tiptoe since Abigail and I will not keep being judged. Shes lost all faith in me now. I cant believe what is going on here. There have been thirty-nine women arrested and Goody Osburn is to be hung! Sarah Good confessed that she had dealt with the Devil so she survives! Am I the only one that can see that this whole thing is a fraud? I just cannot believe that a Christian girl like Mary could allow old woman to be hanged. Elizabeth is very worried. She found out that she had been accused. It was dismissed, but she thinks that Abigail will cry out her name every day until she gets taken in. I tried to reassure her but it was no use because she wouldnt listen. Hale appeared from no-where, it startled me. He mentioned church; asked why I am so often absent. I tried to explain myself but I knew it was no use as he continued to question me. I could not believe it when Cheever came with a warrant for Elizabeth, good and pure as she is. She stands accused by Abigail. Abigail made sure that the poppet was placed in my house then acted a part testifying it was Elizabeth who pushed the needle in. No one can see that the accuser may not be holy. Those crazy children are deciding our fates! When I heard the clank of the chain I cried. I could not breathe. No one sees the truth. Even Hale is a coward! What do I do now? I must confess the truth in court and show that Abigail is a liar, but I cannot ruin my good name in the village. If I do have the courage to Abigail will charge me with lechery but I cannot let Elizabeth die for me- she is too full of goodness. I will go to court tomorrow and I hope I will be strong enough to see justice is done!

In the world of Galileo proof was what was needed to succeed with a scientific hypothesis. In the world of Darwin proof was not needed for a scientific hypothesis to succeed. There were many differences in the worlds of these two great scientists that lead to the reaction to their respective scientific hypothesize. It was not their beliefs alone that led to their peer's views it was also the way each of them conducted themselves. Galileo worked his way to become a respected scientist by most of the intellectual community but he was also despised by many because of his background and because of his attitude towards others. Darwin was well respected by the intellectual community, but the difference was the way they conducted themselves when they were dealing with their hypothesizes. Galileo's Hypothesis Galileo was well known for standing up for what he believed in and pushing the things he wanted. He was constantly writing letters and engaging in debates over the issue of Copernicanism. Galileo's entire reason for doing this was to make the scientific and religious communities accept that Copernicanism was actually a fact and that there was enough proof to believe it. One example of the way Galileo strongly pushed his beliefs on others was the way he preached Copernicanism to the people of Rome in 1615. While he was in Rome trying to improve the church's opinion of him, Galileo was also debating the Aristotelians over this issue and beating them at their own game. Because of his natural talent for debate and because of his intelligence was able to outwit the Aristotelians in these debates. Galileo acted this way because he believed that he was in a position to make these kinds of statements without getting on the wrong side of the church. Darwin and Galileo were very different men who are both remembered as great scientists of their times. While Galileo was condemned for his efforts Darwin was remembered as a hero. He tactics caused many people to despise him in his time, which lead to the ban of his book on Copernicanism. While Darwin preferred to work in his home and have others fight his battles for him. It was because of Darwin's passive promotion of his book that he made very few enemies when compared to Galileo. If Galileo was more like Darwin he may have been better off at the time of his death. While much of the Copernican theory is know as fact now there is still a debate over Darwinism. This is because it has yet to be proven definitively. Darwin was still honored for his contribution of this theory because he did it in a scientific manner and did not impose his opinion onto others.

The business world is rapidly changing with the introduction to new technologies and communication methods. Business corporations, both large and small, are adapting to the new norms of society and have started to apply the internet and email usage to everyday business activities. Within every business office one can find computers, internet, and other technologies that create a quicker, immediate means to communication and allow employees to perform their many tasks and duties associated with their jobs. In recent developments, businesses have begun implementing privacy policies on both employee internet and email usage at the office. Many believe that the invasion of privacy by employers is illegal, but to the contrary, many trials and court cases prove otherwise. To begin with, businesses and corporations that have offered their employees internet and email usage within the office provide a necessary and more convenient way to perform their job duties. These amenities are a privilege to employees and must be respectfully and responsibly operated. According to a recent court case, Fraser v. Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. , 352 F. 3d 107 (3rd Cir. 2003), the privacy rights of employees using company internet servers for email are negated. As ruled in the court, employers have the right to monitor all emails and internet usage by employees to a reasonable extent. If an employee sends, receives, or stores an email within the employers system, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 (Friedman & Reed, 2007)a. Companies may have guaranteed the privacy rights of employees emails, but guarantees are not considered law. In the Smyth v. Pillsbury Company case, a supervisor emailed an inappropriate email to their subordinate via to a home email account. After the subordinate opened the email at home, he or she continued to send the email throughout the office using the company’s internet server. After the Pillsbury company came across the inappropriate email the subordinate was immediately fired (De Pree & Jude, 2006). Regardless to the company’s guarantee the court ruled in favor of the PIllsbury Company, stating â€Å"once the plaintiff (the subordinate) communicated the alleged unprofessional comments to a second person over the e-mail system that was apparently utilized by the entire company, any reasonable expectation of privacy was lost. Another example of the rules of internet and email privacy at the office can be explained through Dow Chemical v. Local No. 564, Operating Engineers, 246 F. Supp. 2d 602 (SD Texas, 2002). Some 254 employees working at Dow Chemicals were sending, receiving, storing, or involved with the creation of many inappropriate emails circulating throughout the office. The company had some sort of software application that took a â€Å"snap shot† of all the emails and internet activity in a given work day. After examining the many different emails, the company disciplined and terminated many of the employees involved. The court decided that the Dow Chemical company was following all laws and regulations associated with the review of company emails. Even though the advancement in email technology has increased the number of emails sent daily, companies have been increasing their privacy software to coexist. Although some of these court cases and examples may seem extreme, employers need these privacy policies to eliminate any possible negative media or lawsuits that are caused by the inappropriate emails. With todays technology, emails can be sent at incredible speeds across the internet to end up in a completely different country from its origin. It is important that employers have the legal right to overlook all emails being sent through their internet server to protect themselves from future prosecution. Implementing a software program that monitors emails in an employers internet server is inexpensive and most businesses have considered it an essential software program. Employers have the right to protect themselves and eliminate the misuse of internet and email through privacy policies because a simple inappropriate comment in an email could turn into a discrimination lawsuit with the employer at fault. Consider the employer avoids any lawsuits from discriminative or inappropriate internet usage, business must know how their employees are working. Thousands of dollars could be lost if employees take time out of their work day to tend personal email or non work related web searches. With the laws and regulations in favor of the employers and businesses, employees must recognize that their employee emails and internet usage are being monitored. Employees must assume that every activity, email, or website conducted on their office computer is being overlooked by their employer. According to Dee Pree & Jude, more than 75% of business internet connections are being monitored for inappropriate usage. Any activity that does not pertain to work or has sexually inappropriate content will be logged by the computer software and viewable to the employer. Employees must expect that their computer privacy is non existent. These privacy policies could also benefit the employees, if employees time on the internet is utilized to complete job duties. While the employer monitors internet and email activity, noticing each employees use of the internet. Employers may recognize the efficiency and effectiveness of the time spent at work and reward the appropriate employees. Currently at my profession there are not many instances when employees sit down and use the internet or the company email to send information. Moreover, there are some policies implemented in the company that prevents the employees from acting inappropriate during interviews, live games, and even in their personal social media profiles. Our organization stresses the importance of representing the organization with respect and with appropriate behavior. Our policies include using appropriate language during all interviews, never acting with poor sportsmanship or selfishness while playing a game, and making sure that you are represented well in all social media profiles. Our organization believes that we are walking representation for what values and beliefs the organization stands for, and enforces all their employees to follow accordingly. Privacy is given to each employee, but once the employee is in the â€Å"spotlight† of the public, policies are enforced to ensure inappropriate behavior never occurs. In conclusion, due to the advancements in technology in the business market, businesses can now conduct business more efficiently and effectively, but with a cost to their employees. Employers are starting to implement privacy policies to both their internet usage as well as their company email allowing them to monitor over their employees. There have been numerous lawsuits and court cases against employers invading the privacy of their employees, but only to find the rulings in favor of the employers. Employees must expect these conditions at their workplaces and review the privacy policies that are being enforced. While on the employers internet, work related activities should only be conducted, and making sure emails are appropriate for the workplace will prevent employees from being prosecuted from their employer.
